New website

Dear signers, friends and supporters, the Basel Declaration has a new home. After a successful decade as Basel Declaration Society, our organization has transformed into Animal Research Tomorrow. As such, we promote openness and fact-based scientific arguments in the international public debate on the necessity and value of animal research for both human and animal health and welfare. For more information please visit our new webpage under

Like the Helsinki Declaration, which forever altered the ethical landscape of human clinical research, the aim of the Basel Declaration is to bring the scientific community together to further advance the implementation of ethical principles such as the 3Rs whenever animals are being used and to call for more trust, transparency and communication on the sensitive topic of animals in research. The Basel Declaration Society, founded on October 5th. 2011, strive to promote the Basel Declaration.

Call for Solidarity / Rally in Milan

On Saturday April 20, Italian animal rights extremists invaded laboratories at the University of Milan and the associated National Institute of Neurosciences to destroy a large number of important research projects.

The Basel Declaration Society made a call for solidarity and collected within four weeks nearly 5700 signatures from all over the world. At the rally in Milan, which was organized by Pro-Test Italia (, Dr Giuliano Grignaschi handed the signatures over to Dr.ssa Bice Chini.

Milano, June 1, 2013: about 300 people including students, researchers and representatives of patients organizations from around Italy demonstrated against the worrying disinformation that is spreading about the need for lab animals in biomedical research, the so-called "witch-hunt" led by animal-rights activists.

I was there in the dual role of head of the Animal Care Unit at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, and spokesperson for the Basel Declaration Society together with many other speakers such as H. Bondi (Neurobiologist; University of Insubria), B. Chini (molecular and cell biologist at the National Research Council's Institute of Neuroscience in Milan), D. Giovannoni (President of Pro-test Italy) and many others but of particular interest was the talk of Nadia Malavasi, Honorary President of the "Thalidomidici Italiani Onlus" Association. She said " I'm here to explain how does it feel to be used such as human cavy".

However all the speakers agreed that researchers should not only open their laboratories, but also give out information outside supermarkets because the public doesn't know what research is, and what we do in our laboratories; what I also said during my short talk is that "We are guilty too, for we don't give out information, and that is why researchers today are talking with people, trying to establish a dialogue".

At the end of my talk I had the honor to hand the Call for solidarity of the Basel Declaration society to Bice Chini representing the animal facility at the University of Milano that was broken by the animal-rights activists in April.
